Ask Away Privacy Policy

Last Updated: June 24, 2026

Welcome to Ask Away. We provide an AI-powered educational platform designed to foster critical thinking and logic in children.

Because our users are children, we operate under a strict "Privacy-First" mandate. This policy outlines how we handle data for both parents and children within our "Double-Wall" ecosystem (the Kid’s Hub and the Parent Portal).

1. Our Core Privacy Principles

  • Anonymity for Children: We do not collect names, nicknames, or any identifying demographics from children.
  • No Data Selling: We never sell user data to third parties or data brokers.
  • No Marketing Trackers: The Kid’s Hub is a clean environment with no third-party marketing cookies, ad trackers, or social media integration.
  • Security by Design: All chat transcripts are encrypted "at rest" in our database.

2. Information We Collect

A. From Parents (Account Holders)

To manage a Household, parents must provide:

  • Authentication Data: Email address and name. If signing in via Google OAuth, we may also receive a Profile Image URL. For email-only login, we store your email and a hashed master password.
  • Household Settings: A system-generated "Household ID" and your specific configuration settings (e.g., preference for daily digest emails).

B. From Children (End Users)

We strictly limit data collection for child profiles to the following:

  • Profile Data: Age and a selected cartoon avatar. We do not ask for, collect, or store real names, nicknames, photos, or last names of children.
  • Chat Transcripts: The full text of conversations between the child and the Ask Away AI. These are stored securely and encrypted to protect privacy.
  • Learning Progression: Data regarding scores, unlocked levels, and performance in the "Logic Academy," Trivia, and Flashcards.
  • Context Cards: Parents may provide custom instructions to the AI (e.g., "Encourage scientific curiosity"). Note: Please be aware that if you include personal family information in these cards, it will be stored and used to personalize the AI’s interactions.

3. How We Use This Information

We use your data solely to:

  • Personalize and maintain the educational AI experience.
  • Enable parental oversight and monitoring via the Parent Portal.
  • Protect the platform from security threats, such as brute-force or spam attacks, by tracking IP addresses in conjunction with Household IDs.

Note: We do not use chat transcripts or child data for marketing, advertising, or to train public AI models.

4. Third-Party Services (Sub-processors)

To power Ask Away, we use trusted third-party providers. Data is processed or stored on their secure servers:

  • Vercel: Cloud hosting and infrastructure.
  • Turso (SQLite): Secure, encrypted cloud database hosting.
  • Google OAuth: Secure parent authentication.
  • Google Gemini API: Our AI engine. While messages are sent to this API to generate responses, we use enterprise-grade settings. Data sent via this API is not used by Google to train its public AI models.
  • Resend (SMTP): Used to send magic login links and essential system notifications to parents.

5. Parental Oversight & Control

Ask Away is built to keep parents in the driver's seat:

  • Consent: A child profile cannot be created until a parent has authenticated the account.
  • Transparency: Parents have 24/7 visibility into all chat transcripts within the Parent Portal.
  • Right to Delete: Parents have explicit controls to permanently delete individual chat sessions, specific child profiles, or the entire household account at any time.

6. Data Security

We implement robust security measures, including:

  • Encryption at Rest: All sensitive data, including chat transcripts, is stored using industry-standard encryption.
  • Rate Limiting: We monitor connection metadata (IP addresses) to prevent unauthorized access and maintain platform integrity.

7. Jurisdictional Focus (UK Beta)

Ask Away is currently in a closed beta phase intended for residents of the United Kingdom. By using this platform, you confirm that you are a UK resident. We comply with the UK GDPR and the Age Appropriate Design Code to ensure a high level of protection for UK families.
